A multispecialty team dedicated to your care

Our multispecialty care team includes breast surgeons, oncologists, radiologists, nurse navigators, genetic counselors, physical and occupational therapists, social workers, financial advocates, and more. We work together to deliver advanced, comprehensive cancer care.

Breast cancer is treated with three different treatments: medical therapy, surgery and radiation.

Medical therapy may include chemotherapy, biotherapy and endocrine therapy.

Surgery may include a lumpectomy (surgery to remove a lump and surrounding tissue) or mastectomy (surgery to remove one or both breasts). Reconstruction may be done in addition to these surgical procedures.

Radiation therapy is used to reduce the likelihood of cancer from returning in the future. It can also treat small areas where cancer is present.

Every treatment plan is customized to meet your emotional and physical needs. Some women require all three treatments: For example, chemotherapy and biotherapy may be the first part of treatment, followed by surgery to remove the cancer, and then radiation to reduce the likelihood of cancer recurring in the future. Some women do not need chemotherapy. Instead, their cancer is managed with surgery as the first step in their treatment, followed by radiation.

Personalized surgery options

Your breast surgeon and care team will work together to recommend treatment options. We explain the different types of surgery and help you decide which treatment is right for you.

  • Breast augmentation and breast lift

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that uses implants to enhance the size and shape of the breasts. Breast augmentation may be performed for cosmetic reasons or to reconstruct a breast after breast cancer surgery or mastectomy.

A breast lift is a surgical procedure that raises breasts by removing excess tissue. A breast lift can be done on its own or as part of a breast augmentation.

  • Breast-conserving surgery

Breast-conserving surgery, also known as lumpectomy or partial mastectomy, only removes the tumor. The goal of this surgery is to remove the cancer while saving as much of the healthy breast tissue as possible. This procedure is typically followed by 4-6 weeks of outpatient radiation therapy.

  • Breast implant removal and replacements

This surgical procedure removes existing breast implants, either completely or replacing them with a new implant.

  • Breast reduction

This surgical procedure is done to reduce the fullness of breasts.

  • Mastectomy with flat closure

Mastectomy with flat closure is a surgical treatment to remove the entire breast. The breast surgeon will discuss placement of the incision with you prior to your surgery day.

  • Nipple or skin-sparing mastectomy

During a nipple or skin-sparing mastectomy, the breast surgeon preserves the skin envelope around the breast tissue. This approach supports breast reconstruction  performed by a plastic surgeon. An implant or tissue from elsewhere in your body can be used to recreate the breast.

  • Oncoplastic surgery

During breast-conserving surgery, cancer is removed from the breast using a surgical approach that reduces the size and may lift the breast. Oncoplastic surgical procedures typically include lifting and reducing the unaffected breast so both breasts have a similar shape and size. Radiation therapy is typically required on the affected breast after this type of surgery.
