Minimally invasive gynecologic surgery

Surgeons at Ascension Seton specialize in minimally invasive surgery for gynecologic conditions, such as cancer, ovarian cysts and endometriosis.

If surgery is recommended as part of your care plan, board-certified and fellowship-trained surgeons who specialize in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery at Ascension Seton deliver a personalized surgical treatment plan that’s right for you and your condition. Gynecologic care is personal, so we start by listening to you, to better understand you and your preferences. Tell us your concerns and ask us your questions — big and small. We take the time to explain options recommended for your care.

Minimally invasive gynecologic surgery

Your care team includes doctors who are specially trained in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery, such as robotic, laparoscopic, hysteroscopic, or vaginal surgery. Minimally invasive techniques create only a few small incisions, with some procedures requiring no incisions at all. Some procedures can be performed on an outpatient basis, meaning you can return home the same day. Other types of surgeries may require a short hospital stay.

Types of minimally invasive gynecologic surgery

Minimally invasive gynecologic surgeons are board-certified and fellowship-trained gynecologists who have completed an additional two years of training in minimally invasive surgical techniques, including:

  • Laparoscopic surgery, a type of surgery that allows a surgeon to access the inside of your abdomen and pelvis without having to make a large incision. Laparoscopic surgery may lead to shorter hospital stays, less discomfort, and a shorter recovery period.
  • Hysteroscopy, a type of surgery that allows a surgeon to examine the inside of your cervix and uterus using a thin tool called a hysteroscope that is inserted in the vagina. Hysteroscopies do not require any incisions and usually have a shorter recovery time.
  • Robotic surgery, or robotic-assisted surgery, a type of surgery where a surgeon uses a computer to control small surgical tools attached to a robotic arm. Robotic surgery has the same advantages as advanced laparoscopic surgery and allows surgeons to operate with increased precision and accuracy while minimizing damage to surrounding tissues.
  • Vaginal surgery, a type of surgery that is performed through the vagina and is the most minimally invasive approach to gynecologic surgery. Vaginal surgery has all of the recovery advantages associated with laparoscopic and robotic surgery while also avoiding any abdominal incisions.
