About Scott E Phillips, MD

Scott E. Phillips, MD, is a board-certified, experienced otolaryngologist (ear, nose and throat doctor) at Ascension St. Vincent in Brownsburg and Carmel, Indiana, and diagnoses and treats ear, nose and throat (ENT) conditions. He specializes in nonsurgical and surgical care for common ailments of the ears, nose and throat, including hearing loss and tinnitus, allergies and sinusitis, and sleep apnea. Dr. Phillips listens to understand your health concerns, then works with you to create a personalized care plan, and collaborates with a multispecialty team of ENT professionals at Ascension Indiana to provide you the best care possible.

Dr. Phillips grew up in Logansport, Indiana, attended Butler University, and studied medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine. While at IU, he also began his career in the United States Air Force, a decision that would positively affect his career for years to come. Following medical school, Dr. Phillips completed his training to become a flight surgeon for the Air Force's highly decorated 55th Special Operations Squadron Hurlburt Field at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida. During this tour of duty, he deployed to Saudi Arabia and Kuwait for Operation Desert Storm. He also participated in several humanitarian assistance missions, including Operation Provide Comfort in Turkey and care for Cuban refugees at Guantanamo Bay.

Following this tour of duty, Dr. Phillips finished his otolaryngology residency and was promoted to Chief of Otolaryngology at Scott Air Force Base near St. Louis, Missouri. While there, he was selected to serve as a NASA Space Shuttle Rescue Team flight surgeon and was on the rescue team of 22 Space Shuttle missions, including the Shuttle's final flight. He was promoted to Deputy Chief of Bioastronautics, where he assisted with rescue plans for future NASA missions.

Dr. Phillips retired from the Air Force in 2015, after 28 years of Active Duty and Reserve service. He continues today as an aeromedical consultant for both the FAA and NASA.

Dr. Phillips finds his current practice rewarding and enjoys caring for the ear nose and throat problems from which children suffer, including ear infections, sleep apnea, sore throats, nasal congestion, and allergies. Just as important, he caters to the families of these children as well. He understands that going to see a specialist can be scary for children and their parents alike, but Dr. Phillips strives to make visits to his office a positive experience.

Dr. Phillips also enjoys helping those adults with nasal and sinus problems. He has completed a fellowship in ENT allergy and otolaryngic allergy.

Dr. Phillips has focused his practice in the areas of pediatric ear nose and throat disorders and nasal health. ENT physicians approach allergy testing treatment a little differently, which can often allow patients to feel better more quickly. For those who hate shots, their office has a way to administer serum without needles, which the office gladly offers to patients. This option is especially popular with children. Having fellowship training in allergy allows him to care for all problems one may encounter with regards to nasal health, and allow 'one-stop shopping' for patients.

Another part of his practice is teaching. As an adjunct professor at the Indiana University School of Medicine and the Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine, he enjoys teaching residents and medical students at all levels of training. Dr. Phillips also enjoys speaking on a national level to other otolaryngologists at various meetings. He has presented at numerous national and international meetings, published a textbook chapter and several papers in medical literature, and is currently active in medical research, and completed a study of the relationship of nasal polyps and acid reflux disease.

Dr. Phillips also teaches advanced trauma life support for the military, Ascension Health, and IU Health systems.
