Dr. Demirag graduated with his doctorate of medicine degree from Hacettepe University School of Medicine in Turkey. He completed residency training in general surgery at Gazi University in Turkey. He went on to a research fellowship at the Harvard Medical School division of organ transplant, followed by a doctorate in immunology at Northeastern University in Boston. Dr. Demirag then completed clinical transplant fellowships at Rush University in Chicago, Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus, Geneva University Hospitals in Switzerland and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Throughout his career, he has served as professor and director of general surgery and solid organ transplantation at Baskent University in Turkey, director of kidney transplantation and co-director of general surgery at Yeditepe University in Turkey. Dr. Demirag comes to Pensacola from the University of Virginia, where he was an associate professor of surgery and transplantation. Dr. Demirag, who has been in practice for more than 20 years, is a member of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons, the European Society of Surgery, the Society of Surgical Oncology, and the Transplantation Society. He has contributed to more than 100 peer-reviewed articles and multiple textbooks and presented at the American Transplant Congress. His research has been published more than 85 times in medical journals, including the International Journal of Surgery, Transplantation Proceedings, European Journal of Radiology, Transplant Infectious Disease, and Experimental and Clinical Transplantation.

Dr. Demirag’s areas of research interest include developing software programs in organ transplant, genetic polymorphism therapeutic drug monitoring and immunologically high-risk patients.

Ascension Sacred Heart collaborates with University of Florida Health through its kidney transplant surgery division, part of the University of Florida College of Medicine’s department of surgery.
