John D. Bonner, MD, is a board-certified, independent ophthalmologist at Ascension Saint Thomas River Park in Columbia, Tennessee, near Nashville. With more than 20 years of experience in comprehensive ophthalmology, Dr. J.D. Bonner is dedicated to delivering personalized, patient-centered care for adults throughout McMinnville and the surrounding Middle Tennessee communities.

Dr. Bonner diagnoses and treats a wide range of eye conditions, with special clinical interests in anterior segment surgery, glaucoma management and ocular surface disease. His approach focuses on helping patients preserve and improve their vision through both medical and surgical care tailored to each individual’s needs.

Prior to joining SouthEast Eye Specialists in 2019, Dr. Bonner owned and operated a successful private ophthalmology practice for more than two decades. He earned his medical degree from the University of South Alabama and completed his four-year ophthalmology residency at the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga.

In addition to caring for patients, Dr. Bonner previously served as a Clinical Instructor for the University of Tennessee Chattanooga Department of Ophthalmology. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Medical Association and the Christian Ophthalmology Society.

When not caring for patients, Dr. Bonner enjoys hiking, water sports and international medical mission work. He regularly travels to Uganda to provide ophthalmology education and surgical eye care services to underserved communities.
