Dr. Griscom was born and a native of Nashville, TN. His grandfather, Dr. John Griscom, was an internist for many years in town and his great uncle was Dr. George Burrus, a cardiac surgeon at St. Thomas West Hospital. He went to elementary school at Overbook School and graduated high school from Montgomery Bell Academy. From there, he went to Furman University to play football where he majored in Religion and pre-medical studies.

Dr. Griscom attended the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Greenville, South Carolina and subsequently continued training in general surgery in Nashville through the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.

During residency, Dr. Griscom became very interested in minimally invasive gastrointestinal surgery along with bariatric surgery. He saw bariatric surgery as a means of treating multiple chronic diseases with a single surgery along with the comprehensive care that bariatric medicine provides to a growing number of patients affected by obesity. He was awarded chief resident of the year at the conclusion of his residency.

Dr. Griscom then was accepted and trained in advanced GI and minimally invasive surgery through Our Lady of the Lake Health System with the Surgeons Group of Baton Rouge in Louisiana. At that time, he participated in their bariatric program and trained extensively with the bariatric, foregut, and hernia surgeons. During his fellowship year, he performed nearly 600 surgeries. Following his training, he returned to his hometown and joined The Surgical Clinic.

When not caring for patients, Dr. Griscom enjoys spending time with his wife and their three childreny, walking his two labs, playing golf, or watching college football.
