Irina Bernescu, MD, is a colon & rectal surgeon at Ascension Saint Agnes in Columbia near Baltimore, Maryland. Dr. Bernescu specializes in minimally invasive colorectal surgery. She did her residency in general surgery at Rutgers University's Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and her colorectal surgery fellowship at the Ferguson Clinic. Before medicine, she graduated with honors with a bachelor's degree in neuroscience and behavior from Barnard College in New York City. She has received multiple awards throughout her postgraduate academic career for her research, most recently focused on colorectal cancer. Since she was a child she has wanted to be a doctor and never wavered from that dream. Growing up, her training as an athlete piqued her interest in the way the human body functions and adapts. Volunteering as an emergency medical technician and other rewarding experiences of helping people in need confirmed her desire to become a doctor. Dr. Bernescu was born in Iasi, Romania, and moved to the United States at the age of 16. She speaks English, Spanish, Romanian, and French. She enjoys spending time outdoors, and traveling and loves to both watch and participate in sports activities.
