Shirali T. Patel, MD, is a general surgeon and surgical oncologist at Ascension Saint Agnes in Columbia, MD. Dr. Patel specializes in pancreatic and hepatobiliary surgery. She is board-certified in general surgery. She did two fellowships, one in vascular surgery at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan and the second pancreatic and hepatobiliary surgery at Methodist Medical Center in Dallas, TX. Dr. Patel and Dr. Cunningham work together as a team to offer world-class, multidisciplinary, thoughtful, personalized evaluation and treatment of a broad spectrum of hepatobiliary diseases and cancer. She is also a leader at Ascension Saint Agnes in minimally invasive surgery and hernia surgery. Dr. Patel graduated from Saint George's University School of Medicine in 2006. She then went on to do a general surgery residency at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey. Before medicine, she earned a BS in physiological science from UCLA. After graduating, she served as a medical volunteer in Ghana, Africa and upon her return to the States she worked as an EMT prior to starting medical school. Her inspiration for Medicine comes from having the opportunity and desire to help others. Dr. Patel has gone on numerous medical missions across the globe that include India, Africa, and Vietnam. Those experiences have been rewarding and helped her fulfill her dream of service to others. She has authored numerous research papers, abstracts and book chapters. Her research interests have been in GI related cancers and the training for surgical fellowships. She was born and raised in Harbor City, California.

When not caring for patients, she enjoys traveling, likes to stay active with snowboarding and hiking, and to relax with a good movie.
