Justin C. Somerville, MD, is a colon & rectal surgeon at Ascension Saint Agnes in Columbia near Baltimore, Maryland. A native of Maryland, Dr. Somerville grew up the son of a wonderful and excellent surgeon. His father instilled in him the meaning of caring and concern for those that need medical help. As a young man, he became an IFR-certified pilot and loved the hands-on aspect of working complex systems. He used that desire to help obtain a degree in mechanical engineering from Drexel University. He spent time working for GE Aerospace helping design space satellites. He then worked for Kensey Nash Corporation as a research and development engineer. He helped design implantable devices to aid in hemostasis after transvenous medical procedures. Dr. Somerville knew he wanted to do more. He went to the University of Maryland Medical School and subsequently did his general surgery training at that same institution. He then fell in love with colorectal surgery and did a fellowship at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. He started practicing in 2005. He is board-certified in both general and colorectal surgery.
