Advanced spine surgery improves quality of life for 81-year-old patient

At Ascension Sacred Heart in Pensacola, neurosurgeon, Dr. Christopher Villar, performed complex spine surgery that helped an 81-year-old patient overcome severe scoliosis and regain mobility.
At 81 years old, Michael M. knew that back surgery was a serious decision. For years, he had lived with worsening scoliosis, making walking difficult and causing him to rely on a cane or walker to get around.
Michael’s condition was so severe that he could not stand upright and was hunched over towards the ground, and at his age, he lost hope that he could find relief.
“I had seen several doctors before I found Dr. Villar,” Michael said. “One told me I was too complicated to treat locally. Others didn’t give me much confidence. But when I read about Dr. Villar’s experience, I felt hopeful for the first time.”
Dr. Christopher Villar is a board-certified neurosurgeon at Ascension Sacred Heart, specializing in the treatment of complex brain and spine conditions. His expertise includes brain and spine tumors, traumatic injuries, strokes, neurological disorders, and advanced degenerative spine issues such as severe scoliosis. When appropriate, he utilizes minimally invasive techniques for both brain and spine surgery.
Michael met with Dr. Villar several times over the course of a year before deciding to move forward with surgery.
“Dr. Villar didn’t pressure me. He explained everything clearly, answered all my questions, and gave me the time I needed to make my decision,” he said. “That made all the difference.”
For Dr. Villar, Michael’s case was a reminder of why he chose to specialize in spine conditions. He expressed how these advanced, complex cases inspire his work and passion to provide dedicated care to his patients.
“His condition is exactly what I came to Pensacola for. While there were many spine surgeons in the area, none had the level of training needed to correct this exact issue,” he said.
To correct Michael’s condition called Kyphoscoliosis, Dr. Villar performed a spinal alignment procedure to help him stand upright. After the surgery, Michael stayed in the hospital for about a week and then spent two more weeks at an inpatient rehab center. By the time he returned home, he was walking again with steady progress each week. “Seeing him return to daily activities has been incredibly meaningful, his whole demeanor has changed. He cannot stop smiling!” said Dr. Villar.
Now, just a few months post-surgery, Michael is walking without any assistance and getting back to the life he had missed.
“I feel like a new person,” he said. “I’m going out to dinner, buying new clothes, even swimming again. I was becoming isolated before. Now, I feel alive.”
He continues to follow up with Dr. Villar and has a 12-month check-in scheduled.
“I would absolutely recommend Dr. Villar,” Michael said. “If I had to do it all over again, he’s the only doctor I would trust.”
