Thomas Hart, APRN, joined Ascension St. Vincent’s bariatric program in Jacksonsville, Florida, as a nurse after completing his own journey with bariatric surgery and weight loss.

Thomas H.,understands the weight-loss journey better than most, because he has lived it as both a patient and an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) for the Ascension St. Vincent’s bariatric program in Jacksonville, Florida. Thomas dedicates his career to helping others navigate the same path he once walked. At just 30 years old, Thomas found himself facing serious health concerns. Weighing 350 pounds, he was already taking medication for both high blood pressure and high cholesterol. He knew something had to change, but like many others in his position, the idea of weight loss felt overwhelming. He contemplated bariatric surgery not just as a way to lose weight, but as a crucial step toward a healthier life.

Determined to take control of his health, Thomas chose to undergo weight loss surgery through Ascension’s bariatric program. Unlike some who enter the process feeling uncertain, Thomas was confident in the procedure, the support system, and the lifestyle changes required to make it successful. He committed to the necessary pre-surgery adjustments, ensuring his body and mindset were ready for the journey ahead.

The results were remarkable. Over the course of two years, he lost half of his body weight—ultimately shedding 200 pounds. His dedication to the process paid off, and with each pound lost, he gained something even more valuable: improved health, increased energy, and a newfound sense of confidence.

Bariatric surgery combined with the right mindset and effort, can be truly life-changing. The health issues that once challenged him have all but disappeared, and he is now able to enjoy an active lifestyle. Traveling, exercising, and simply moving through daily life no longer feel like challenges, but now they are sources of joy.

His weight loss not only transformed his own life but also reshaped his professional journey. Inspired by the positive experience he had with Ascension’s program, he decided to join the very team that helped him succeed. Now, as an APRN in the Ascension St. Vincent’s bariatric program, he supports others who are beginning their own weight-loss journeys.

Thomas’ personal experience gives him a unique advantage in his field. He understands the fears, struggles, and hopes of his patients because he has been in their shoes. His message to those considering weight-loss surgery is simple yet powerful, “Do the work, and the process will work.”

Seeing patients transform their lives the way he did brings Thomas fulfillment. He knows firsthand that the journey isn’t always easy, but he also knows it’s worth it. By sharing his story, he hopes to inspire and support others as they take the first steps toward better health.

Through his work, Thomas continues to be an example of hope for those looking to reclaim their health and happiness.
