After undergoing heart surgery, William was faced with a devastating and unexpected outcome—he lost his leg as part of the procedure. The physical and emotional toll of such a life-altering surgery can be immense, but William chose not to face it alone. He came to Ascension St. Vincent’s Southside Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility in Jacksonville, Florida, for the next chapter of his healing journey.

“I had heart surgery,” William said simply, “and they had to take my leg.”

That sentence carries the weight of the situation, but William’s story is one of resilience, hope, and a deep appreciation for the care and connection he found at Ascension.

“My stay here was great,” William shared. “I liked my therapists.”

His admiration for the therapy team, especially two standout staff members, quickly became clear.

“The two best therapists I ever had were Katie and Liz—they were really, really good,” he said. “If I ever had to come back again, I would want Katie and Liz, although I hope I never have to come back besides just saying, ‘hi.’”

That kind of praise doesn’t come lightly. For William, therapy wasn’t just about physical recovery—it was about building trust, encouragement, and the motivation to reclaim his independence. “Wonderful therapists,” he said. “I wish I could take them home with me.”

Katie and Liz didn’t just help William strengthen his body—they helped restore his spirit. With their consistent support, professionalism, and personalization, they became an important part of his recovery process. “They’re the best therapists I’ve ever had,” he repeated.

But it wasn’t just the therapy team that stood out. William also spoke highly of the nursing staff on his floor. “The nurses on this floor have all been really good to me,” he said. “They’ve treated me with kindness, respect, and real care. You can tell they want the best for their patients.”

What sets Ascension St. Vincent’s Southside Rehabilitation Facility, in William’s eyes, is the way the whole team works together to create an environment that’s not just about healing the body—but also about uplifting the mind and spirit.

As William prepared to leave, he did so with deep gratitude for the people who had supported him through one of the most difficult times in his life. “Ten out of 10—I would recommend this place to anyone who needs real rehab,” he said. “I came here after losing a part of myself, and I’m leaving stronger—physically and mentally—because of the people here.”

For William, Ascension wasn’t just a rehabilitation facility. It was a place of recovery, connection, and hope—a place where healing was possible, even after unimaginable loss.
